Senior Mechanical Engineer
About us:
Guardian Agriculture is developing large multicopters for applying agricultural chemicals to high-value crops. Relative to existing plane- and helicopter-based crop spraying solutions, our systems radically improve precision and safety while reducing chemical use, reducing impact on pollinating insects, and minimizing opportunities for organisms to acquire chemical resistance.
Guardian is a small, multi-disciplinary team of talented engineers, technicians, and operators who prioritize high reliability product and service design over exploratory R&D. We are a hands-on team and split our time between development work, system testing, and field deployments. We value safety, thoughtful design, teamwork, and a growth mindset as we scale the organization and build an autonomous system that farmers can trust.

SUMMARY:
In the role of Guardian's Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll help lead the design of our multicopters, ground system, and associated elements. This will involve both development of core mechanical structures, FMEA, design for manufacturing, and industrial design of our entire system. A history of holistic design, from prototype development to shipping completed products to market, is critical experience for this position.
What You Will Do:
- Design and integrate components (varying from small custom electronics enclosures to full chassis and ground support vehicle components)
- Work within a small team to design, fabricate and test
- Enjoy the gritty details of part design, material selection and manufacturing techniques
- Utilize Onshape/Solidworks to create detailed models, assemblies and drawings
- Execute analytical (hand calculations, FEA) and experimental analysis
- Prototype parts using in-house equipment (glorious machine shop, welding, etc.), skills dependent
- Provide management feedback on build vs. buy for various components in support of company-wide objectives
- Communicate effectively with vendors and suppliers for prototyping and low-volume manufacturing
- Create and maintain engineering documentation
- Design components and systems that reduce assembly effort; work with the operations team to verify these approaches and incorporate their feedback
- Aid in developing test plans for validation of designs
- Working in close-knit teams
- NOTE: Position may require occasional travel to field sites
To Be Successful You Will Have:
- Strong design portfolio
- 5-7 years of experience in New Product Development (NPD)
- Hands-on work ethic and ego-free collaboration skills
- Ability to creatively solve mechanical design challenges creatively, using rigorous design processes to ensure product success
- Ability to work across disciplines to design, prototype and solve problems
- Extensive CAD experience (Onshape/Solidworks preferred)
- Familiarity with a variety of manufacturing methods (machining, sheet metal, composites, weldments, thermoplastics, etc.)
- Experience with requirements development and evaluation
- Experience developing tolerance stack analysis
- Experience with risk analysis techniques, FMEA
Nice To Haves:
- Experience with mid-sized mechanical systems (car, aircraft, tractors, atvs, etc.)
- Passion for designing and building physical or electromechanical devices of any kind
- Personal projects showcasing relevant strengths
- Experience with large growth companies (i.e., 10-100 people)
Benefits:
Flexible time off, competitive salary, stock options, free company lunch every day, comprehensive benefits package, lots of tools, and the opportunity to build, use, and play with flying machines that will have an environmental impact.
